Annual Festivals & Events in Abruzzo
From Easter through the summer, many towns in Abruzzo have their own festivals whose origins go back to the Middle Ages, Roman or even pre-Roman times. They may be Christian, but may have the unmistakable whiff of pagan festivities. In Loretto Aprutino, the droppings of a bull are read to make predictions for the coming agricultural year. In Sulmona, doves are released and a veil falls off the head of a statue of Mary; both are read and interpreted as signs for the future. There are many many festivals around Abruzzo during the year. EVERYWHERE the week before & after Ferragosto on August 15th
This is the “Silly Season” with Festivals & Concerts EVERYWHERE and in most Villages .... August 15th is a national holiday. Marking the Feast of the Assumption. It’s origins are religious but in recent years it has simply become the most important public holiday of the summer season. Most people take extra time off work and head out of the town to the holiday resorts.
