Shops & Banks
A few thoughts before you shop
It’s great to shop Local as much as you can and spread yourself around but there are, without doubt, savings to be made with a visit to the
large Supermarkets. The decision is yours but do use your Local where it doesn’t matter and, as a bonus, you will get a chance to practice
your language skills.
One thing we did quite early on, as a necessity, was to stop buying bottled water (except for e few Frizzante ones) so we had less to pull up
the hill back to our apartment. The water in the apartment would “probably” be OK but why take chances? We have a routine where we use
the water filter, keep a jug topped up and covered with a towel, then use it in the kettle & bottles in the bedroom and for taking out
(keeping your bottled water in the fridge is very nice too).
STOP! …. Before you drive off why not plan what we have coined as a “Shopping Picnic”? You’ve made the effort to drive out and drag your
Shopping Trolley up the hill (or better still DOWN the hill) back to the apartment so why not make it an enjoyable trip out and do a Picnic
first - or at least do a local Cafe stop and have a Coffee/Cake before you start! <Click here for “Shopping Picnic” ideas>
Local Shops Around Secinaro
Around the Piazza area there is a General Groceries Shop (Recently taking on some of the things done by Il Bar which is currently closed,
hopefully temporarily, since the end of 2021); down the hill a little there is a Butchers on the Right and a General Shop/Cigarettes on the
Left …. Up the hill above the small Church is Antonio’s small Supermarket, which is as good as the large Supermarkets for fresh cut meats
etc for Anti Pasta!
Half-Day Closing in Secinaro is on Thursday afternoons
Local Markets
Best to get there before 1.00pm otherwise some stalls will be packing up to leave
Secinaro: Used to be Every Monday but is now limited to maybe a single stall.
Rocca Di Mezzo: Every Wednesday in the Piazza di Piemonte (Along the road behind the fountain
which is pedestrians only on the day)
Sulmona: Every Wednesday and Saturday in the Piazza Garibaldi (Go though the Aquaduct Arches to
the Piazza, which is pedestrians only on the day - i.e. No Parking in the square)
Castelvecchio Subequo: Every Tuesday and Friday in the Piazzo Primo Maggio, near where the Bank used to be, it is no parking on the
day!
Popoli: Every Monday and Thursday
Nearby Supermarkets
Note: Beware when you see “Offerta” at some Supermercato which you will only be able to take advantage of if you
sign up for a Loyalty Card and it can make a big difference! (E.g. Carrefour and the Coop)
Castelvecchio Subequo (Coal): Through the village and down the hill a bit you will see it on your Left.
Raiano (Tigre): Through the village, Right at the Roundabout and down the avenue of trees. You will see it on your Left
at the second Roundabout.
Sulmona (Carrefour): Second exit at the Pratola Roudabout, down the hill and it’s on the
Right. Our favourite at the moment as we like to walk back out over the road for a very
enjoyable Tea/Coffee/Coke & Cake (Sometimes a Pizza). Good for doing a “big shop” and
you can get good local Wines/Cheese. You can also get some Gluten Free stuff if you need
it. There are separate counters for your Cheese, your Fresh Fish and your fresh Meat.
The Meat Counter is mostly Gluten Free as there are no additives - the Burgers and the
Sausages being especially nice (There is also an Electrical Shop and modern Clothes Shop
next door and an excellent Cafe over the road!)
Sulmona (Eurospin): Go past the Sulmona turning and you should see signs to it.
Sulmona (Coop): On your Left with other shops and cafes in same complex (Toilets at the far end)
Sulmona (Lidl): Past the Coop, then about the second on the Right, see it half way up on your Right
Local Banks with and Bancomat Machines
Castelvecchio Subequo: The Bank/Bancomat was located in same place as the Weekly Market) but is now closed!
The Post Office is located through the car park, down a few steps and across the road to your right (set back a bit, down
some steps near the street sculpture).
Raiano: On the corner near the roundabout - we normally pull in on the way back from Sulmona for the Bancomat
Rocca Di Mezzo: The Bank/Bancomat are set back a bit on your Right just before the main Car Park on your Left.
