“Shopping Picnic” Ideas
Before you drive off why not plan what we have coined as a “Shopping Picnic”? You’ve made the effort to drive out and drag your Shopping
Trolley up the hill (or better still DOWN the hill) back to the apartment so why not make it an enjoyable trip out and do a Picnic first - or at
least have a Coffee/Cake before you start!
Rocca Di Mezzo
Market day is every Wednesday with Bank/Bancomat on your Right going into the town. There are plenty of shops & cafes and a small
supermarket if you turn Left at the end of the promenade through town.
:
You could walk up to the Church at the top, winding your way through the small streets, and have your “Shopping Picnic” up there or just
enjoy a drink/gelato in town as you shop. You could vist nearby Rovere first and sit outside a cafe there or, If you are fit & able and want a
proper Picnic Spot, then you could walk up to the top and have your Picnic near the Angel Monument.
Castelvecchio Subequo
Market day is every Tuesday and Friday in the Piazzo Primo Maggio, near the Bank, which is no parking on the day! There are not many
shops but there is a large Church to look round, a Furniture Shop, Mens Barber Shop (Walter’s) and a couple of cafes with outside seats
along the bottom of the street where you can have a drink/cake before driving down the road to the Local Supermarket (Coal) which has
parking outside or across the road. If you want a place to eat your Picnic, there is a spot opposite with a couple of tables and a good view.
Raiano (Tigre): Through the village, Right at the Roundabout and down the avenue of trees. You will see it on your Left
at the second Roundabout.
:
You could spend the morning swimming/sunbathing and having your Picnic in the Acquagarden near Corfinio. They also have a nice cafe as
well for a drink or a pizza (don’t forget your swimming hat).
Sulmona
Market day is every Wednesday and Saturday in the Piazza Garibaldi (Go though the Aquaduct Arches to the Piazza, which is pedestrians
only on the day - i.e. No Parking in the square). In Sulmona you have a choice of Lidl Supermarket, Eurospin or the shopping centre where
the Coop is located - there are a couple of decent cafes there for a meal (with toilets).
:
You might like to visit the village of Pacentro nearby (The singer Madonna’s birth town) or the
Monastry in Baddia or, if you are fit and able, then you could walk up to the Hermitage for your
Picnic which sits on the side of the mountain and can be seen as you drive to Sulmona.
:
If you use the Carrefour Supermarket near Pratola Peligna before you get to Sulmona then our
favourite is to park up and walk over the road to the cafe opposite (with toilets). There you can have
a comfortable drink/cake/pizza etc sat inside or outside.
Or you could spend the morning swimming/sunbathing and having your Picnic in the Acquagarden
near Corfinio on your way there.
They also have a nice cafe as well for a drink or a pizza (don’t forget your swimming hat).
