Celebrating Christmas/New Year in Abruzzo
During Christmas & New Year, many towns in Abruzzo have their own festivals whose origins go back to the Middle Ages, or Roman times. To say "Merry Christmas" in Italian = "Buon Natale" or "Buone Feste Natalizie" Today in Italy, Christmas trees are decorated, but the focal point of decoration is the Nativity scene. Italians take great pride in the creation of the manger (Il presepe). You might see live donkeys and animals if you are lucky and DON'T miss the Natavity Scenes in the Grotto Di Stiffe every year! Father Christmas? .... Children in Italy believe in a female version of Father Christmas called La Befana, an old woman who flies on a broomstick and brings presents. According to legend, three Wise Men asked La Befana for directions to Bethlehem. She was asked to join them but said "No" three times. It took an unusually bright star and a band of angels to convince her that she should join them, but she was too late. She never did find the Christ child and has been searching ever since .... on January 6, the Feast of Epiphany, La Befana goes out on her broom to fill the stockings of sleeping children with treats. To say "Happy New Year" in Italian = "Buon Nuovo Anno" If you want a Local New Year’s meal, it can be expensive at a fixed price (Probaly €40-€50) but will include lots of courses and celebration/fireworks as the clock chimes 12. There are many celebrations at Christmas and New Year in and around Secinaro. Some of interest reasonably near to our starting point of Secinaro are listed below:
