Animals in Abruzzo
There are plenty of animals to seek out in Abruzzo - mythical and otherwise
(But I’ve yet to see a bear!)
Fattoria Valle Magica - Near Carapelle Calvisio
Fattoria Valle Magica is a unique day out for anyone wanting to experience time away from the
stress of the city to gain freedom, space and fresh air. We rear rare breed donkeys, sheep, pigs,
goats, chickens (and more), while focusing on ethical, ecological and sustainable farming
methods. As a visitor, you can take our informative tour of the farm, meet and learn about each
breed we keep and the products we make. If you want to enjoy a fuller experience, you can
combine the tour with lunch, comprising of a tagliere of our salumi, sotto oli plus cheese and
more. This is followed by a mixed grill of farm reared meats for you to cook on your allocated
BBQ (charcoal & tools provided). Your lunch including 1/4 liter of local wine can be enjoyed at
your private, open-air but shaded table. Visit our website to book your visit or one of our
experiences including donkey trekking, aperitivo and more. In addition we have farm produced
products you can buy at the farm to take home with you.
La Fattoria Degli Animali - Near Pescassirole
"The animal farm" is like a big family where many cute animals live together in perfect harmony.
There are: Tibetan and Girgentana goats, donkey sheep,. Local and Vietnamese piglets. Among
the farmyard animals are tufted hens, local and Andalusian chickens, ducks, swans, guinea fowls
and pheasants.
The goal is to introduce children and adults to the habits of farm animals: the maternal instinct,
parental care, the defense of the group, the struggle for the territory, more or less emerging
characteristics in the various species.

Safari Park D’Abruzzo - Near Lanciano/Vasto

Bears in Abruzzo
According to the signs on our circular walk near Ovindoli, there
are Bears in Abruzzo! But I don’t expect to come across one -
famous last words!
The Brown Marsican Bear is the symbol of the Abruzzo National
Park. It is a subspecies, which is genetically different from
alpine bears, and is thus endemic to Central Italy. Recent
scientific researches have estimated a population of about 40
individuals within the Park territory and surrounding areas.
Centro Visita del Lupo (Visitors’ Centre)
Spotted the Poster while booking our Canoe Trip with Il
Bosso near Popoli.
The Wolf Visitor Center is owned by the State Forestry
Carabinieri Corps. It is located within the enchanting
scenery of the Maiella National Park and it is a great
place to experience an exciting outdoor adventure with
the whole family!
The Center promotes knowledge of the wolf and raises
awareness of the importance of this fascinating species.
It currently takes care of and houses wild animals found
injured, conducts scientific research and has the
objective of spreading a better knowledge of the
predator even outside the protected areas.

Visited again in June 2024 to make sure it was still operating
and it was! Not too easy to find but basically, head out of
Sulmona past the Pelino Confetti Mueum on the SR479 until you
see the turn off left to Introdacqua then at the next turning left you
should see the sign to the Centro Asinomania.

We phoned and booked ahead for a visit after 3.00pm mid
week when the children’s work was finished and they fitted
us in for an adult Donkey Ride which was quite an
experience.
