Castles in Abruzzo
There are a few castles to seek out in Abruzzo Some big, some small. The ones we have visited
which are a sensible distance to drive are listed below.
For more details and how to get there, check the “Days Out” Pages.
Castle = Castello (Plural “Castelli”)
This is one of our favourites and is worth the scary drive up!
Park up and enjoy the village before visiting the Castle (but check
when it is open), then you can check out a few shops, visit the
church and have a meal if you like.
There is a lot to do around Popoli before you take a walk up to the
Castle. Park up and enjoy the village first - check out a few shops,
have an ice cream and visit a couple of Churches. There are a
couple of decent places for lunch as well.
On the way up you can check out the “14 Stations of the Cross”
Sculptures
If you are out for the day, you can drive over to the other side of the main road to Country Park
(with Visitor Centre and Toilets) for a nice relaxing walk to see the “source of the river” which is
not something you see very often!
Celano Castle (Castello Piccolomini)
You can park up around the Castle or down the street to visit the
Castle which is a good one to visit on a rainy day as it includes
11 rooms of Museum with some English translations which is not
always the case in Italy.
Afterwards you can walk around the outside and have a Gelato
(ice-cream) or carry on out of town and view the start of the
Celano Gorge. Not easy to find, so check the “Days Out” Pages
for Celano.
Forte Spagnola (L’Aquila)
Still not open after the Terremoto (Earthquake) in 2009
Roccacasale
Can be seen in the distance every time you drive down to the Autostrada from Secinaro and through Raiano
but it is one that you might never get round to visiting.
Expect stunning views of the Peligna Valley from its’ Castle and cozy village. Get a real taste of authentic
Italian rural life.
While you are there, check out the nearby facilites for Canoeing/Kayaks etc on the River Tirone (The same
river that you can visit from Raiano lower down the valley.

Roccascalegna - Abruzzo’s Castle In The Sky
About 1hr 48mins from Secinaro via the Autostrada, then off right at Manoppello on SS81
Roccascalegna is a small town of 1,400 inhabitants, situated on the
hills surrounding the Sangro river. Castello Medioevole di
Roccascalegno is known as Abruzzo’s “Castle In The Sky”.
The Castle is a 15th Century medieval castle which since 1700 was
abandoned for three centuries, during which the bad weather and the
thefts of the local population helped to ruin its structure, until the
restoration work that restored the Roccascalegna Castle to its former
glory in 1996. The walk up to the castle is amazing!
Open Sun-Sat 10.00-1.00pm/3.00-7.00pm
Try the “Gastronomic and Beer” Tour at the Medieval Castle (£26 on Trip Advisor)
The meeting point is at the Tap Room of the Micro Brewery Delphin in Roccascalegna, from where the guide
will accompany the participants to the Medieval Castle of Roccascalegna for a tour of approximately 40
minutes. Then back to the Brewery and take part in a craft beer tasting session.
