But what if it rains?
Don’t panic if it rains, you can always stop in and relax, or learn some Italian - that is what holidays are all about.
First thing to do is check the weather forecast. If you are up in Secinaro, make sure that it is not just the Local Climate.
You can often see a big change in weather just by going down towards Raiano/Sulmona. Failing that go off towards
Pescara where there are things to do come rain or shine (Take your Summer & your Rainy Day Clothes just in case!)
DON’T drive to Pacentro, it’s not good on a rainy day and
the Castle, even if it is open, won’t give you much shelter
from the rain.
Try a drive over to Celano - the weather may be different
and the Castle is a good inside visit and more likely to be
open - take your Waterproofs anyway so that, being
British, you can “Sing in the Rain!”
If the weather changes then you can at least check out
the start of the Celano Gorge Walk
Celano Castle
Should be open to go inside
Pacentro in the Rain
Save it for a sunny day!
Sulmona indoor Pool
Don’t forget your swimming caps
Try the indoor pool at Sulmona - if the weather changes
then you can go outside! AND, Sulmona is not too bad in
the rain - there are Churches, Museums & Art Galleries
open …. and don’t forget the Confetti Factory/Museum
which will be open to visitors if it is in their normal
working hours 8.00-12.15pm; 15.00-18.30pm (Just
outside Sulmona on the road towards Scanno)
Sulmona Confetti
Try the Confetti Museum
Pescara Museums
Folk Museum/Media Museum etc
Chieti Museum
Unknown Warrior
Take in the Museum(s) in Chieti - check out the Sculptures, especially
the famous “Unknown Warrrior”
Then drive over to Pescara to check out the weather again and if it is
still bad you can visit the Main Museum and the smaller
Film/Photography Museum nearby …. Park in the normal place near the
large footbridge and walk back towards town in your waterproof gear!
Visit the Cantina Zaccagnini Wine Cellars - just off to the right of the
Autostrada on the way to Pescara, leaving at the turn off to Torre De
Passeri …. The whole thing is a nice mixture of Wine Making, Sculpture
and Art! …. For a guided tour, you need to ring ahead during normal
working hours and you may be lucky to get an English Speaking Guide.
If you don’t want to drive quite so far, try the Petrotonj Cellars in
Vitorino, another of our favourites!
If you are ok with a longer 1.5hr Drive, then you could visit the small Ceramic Museum and the Olive Oil Museum at
Loreto Aprutino …. If you go to the small Ceramics Museum first, you can get a Combined Ticket to go over to the Olive
Oil Museum, then they will take you round and open up the Museum for you.
Don’t forget to visit the nearby Church “Chiesa Di S. Maria in Piano” which is worth a look round
