Terrormoto 2009 (Poem2)
Written one year on having visited the area Mother Nature’s gone to ground, Her devastating power is sleeping sound. Time passes, you’ve looked and you’ve gone. You’re sorry for us but life must go on. Your life goes on the same as before But ours has changed, for good, if not more! We don’t expect YOU to see it but there’s a fear that’s not gone. We try to ignore it and not pass it on! “For the sake of the children” as a quote it sounds fine But we’ve lost all that we worked for, so allow us some time! To wallow in our misery, just for a while ....We’ll get back to normal and after that, we can smile! Minor cracks are everywhere you’ll see them if you care. WE don’t see - unless we want to - light a candle, say a prayer! We lived in quaint houses, the Storico part of town. Still there to remind us but propped up/falling down! Now we’re in Prefabs, remember them from the war? How long did they stay? …. Generations, and more! Not much to look forward to but we’re doing our best. We’ve painted them yellow and feathered our new nest! We’ve painted our Prefabs and they’re looking quite nice. But the question remains, “Does lightening strike twice?” Worst of all, WE’VE lost our heritage which you may think of as just art. But to us, it’s where we came from, it’s what made us what we are! Centro Storico …. no longer on the map! No wishing or rebuilding will ever bring it back! Banished from the kingdom because our house has fallen down! Well that’s how it feels on the outskirts of town! They’ve given us modern looking “houses” and tarmac drives have been put down, I know I should be grateful BUT …. “MY HOUSE IS ON THE GROUND!” John Steels (April 2010) …. Returning to Italy 1 year on after the disaster in L’Aquila on 6 th April 2009 at 3.30am P.S. Earthquake in Italian is “Terremoto”
